Monday Qualifier Earns Victory on Champions Tour With SuperStroke Grip

November 3, 2010

A Monday qualifier using a SuperStroke Slim putter grip won the AT&T Championship in a playoff on the Champions Tour Sunday. It was the 3rd victory of the year for a player using a SuperStroke grip on the world's top professional tours.

The 55-year-old Niagara Falls native and golf director at the Little Turtle Country Club in Westerville, Ohio hit two key putts with the help of his oversized putter grip he bought at a golf retail shop in July.

He made a six foot putt on the final hole to push the playoff and a five-footer on the first playoff hole to seal the victory. His 27 Putts Per Round Average (T4th) helped the player to earn exempt status on the Champions Tour in 2011 and collect a paycheck of$262,500.

"I was pretty calm with the whole thing," said the former Ohio State University golf captain. "Jeff had a 12-or 15-foot putt for par and he missed it, so I was just trying to stay calm and not fall down. I tried to breathe and go through the normal routine because, before I hit it, I knew what we were playing for. And it went in."

His win, the first by a Monday qualifier on the Champions Tour in six years and only the 11th time ever, ends a four-year run of the winner playing as a Monday qualifier.

"Now we don't have to do that," said the former insurance salesman. "I get to go play in 25 tournaments next year. I get to set a schedule, I get some certainty again and I get to play in some stuff. It's all of the things we've been working for, bottom line. It's a great door-opener."
